Baggage service

I/ Carry-on baggage

Effective from: October 10, 2023

 

Regulations on Carry-on baggage:

Carry-on baggage allowed on board must meet the following conditions:

1. Weight conditions:

Each passenger (except infants under 2 years old) is allowed to carry 01 main carry-on baggage item and/or 01 small personal item with the total weight of carry-on baggage not exceeding 07kg (depending on fare class and route).

2. Size conditions:

  • 01 main carry-on baggage item with maximum dimensions of 56cm x 36cm x 23cm.
  • 01 small personal item (including one of the following):
    • 01 handbag or books, magazines, camera, baby food bag, airport shopping bag... with dimensions not exceeding 30cm x 20cm x 10cm.
    • 01 garment bag with maximum dimensions when opened not exceeding 114cm x 60cm x 11cm.
    • 01 laptop bag with maximum dimensions of 40cm x 30cm x 10cm.

3. Carry-on baggage labeling conditions:

Carry-on baggage must be attached with Vietjet carry-on baggage labels. Passengers are requested to contact Vietjet staff to attach labels for carry-on baggage in accordance with the airline’s regulations at the Check-in counter. All carry-on baggage without “carry-on baggage labels” will be refused for carriage on board.

 

(*) Important notes:

  • Carry-on baggage brought on board must comply with Vietjet regulations and must fit under the seat in front of you or in the overhead compartment in the passenger cabin. Any baggage that we determine to exceed the permitted weight or size will not be allowed on board.
  • We have the right to re-check the weight and size of your carry-on baggage at the boarding gate. If the carry-on baggage does not comply with regulations, you will be required to pay a fee for transportation or your baggage will be refused for carriage.
  • Baggage fees will be higher at check-in counters and at the boarding gate. Fees will be collected in local currency through available methods depending on each airport’s conditions. Please ensure to pre-purchase baggage to save costs.

II/ Checked baggage

1. Standard checked baggage

  • The weight of standard checked baggage must not exceed 32kg per piece
  • Dimensions must not exceed: 119cm x 119cm x 81cm
  • Golf equipment with total dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 203cm will be considered as standard checked baggage

Passengers may pre-register checked baggage services via Website, Ticket Offices, Agents and Customer Service Centers. Checked baggage service fees will be higher when purchased at the airport.

2. Oversized checked baggage (Service effective from 03/01/2020)

This service applies only on Vietjet flights (VJ)

  • Oversized baggage weight must not exceed 32kg per piece
  • Dimensions exceeding standard checked baggage but not exceeding 200cm x 119cm x 81cm
  • Oversized baggage package purchased in advance includes standard baggage fee and handling service fee
  • Passengers may register in advance via Website, Ticket Offices, Agents and Customer Service Centers

(*) Notes:

  • Passengers purchasing oversized baggage package are allowed to check baggage corresponding to the purchased weight, including 1 oversized item per passenger per sector
  • Passengers may still check additional standard baggage if remaining weight is available

(Example: Passenger purchases a 30kg oversized package → may check 1 oversized item of 25kg + 1 standard baggage item of 5kg)

  • For the second oversized item onward, passengers must purchase additional service at the airport, and comply with the limit of 2 oversized items per passenger per sector. However, service availability may vary depending on actual airport operations.
  • Passengers who have purchased standard baggage may change to oversized baggage at least 3 hours before departure by contacting sales channels. Fees will be higher when purchased at the airport.

3. General conditions of checked baggage

3.1 Items not accepted for transport as checked baggage

The airline reserves the right to refuse carriage of baggage or items in baggage in the following cases:

a. Items not properly packed or not safe under normal transportation conditions.
b. Items that may endanger aircraft, people or property, including dangerous goods as defined by ICAO/IATA.
c. Items prohibited by laws or regulations of any country involved.
d. Items deemed unsuitable due to weight, shape, size or nature.
e. Fragile or perishable items.
f. Live or dead animals.
g. Fresh seafood, frozen seafood or meat unless properly packed and approved.
h. Firearms and ammunition.
i. Explosives, gases, flammable liquids, toxic, infectious, radioactive, corrosive or oxidizing materials.
j. Weapons such as swords, knives and similar items unless specially approved.
k. Valuable items such as cash, jewelry, cameras, laptops, phones should be carried in hand baggage, not checked baggage.

Especially, detachable lithium batteries and power banks are only accepted in carry-on baggage (not in checked baggage).

(*) Notes:

- Baby strollers, wheelchairs and mobility aids will be transported free of charge.
- Infants (under 2 years old) are not entitled to baggage allowance.
- No baggage exceeding 32kg will be accepted for health and safety reasons.
- Oversized items (sports equipment) may be transported in cargo compartment with additional fees.
- Large musical instruments may be transported as oversized baggage or occupy an extra seat (max 165cm x 44cm x 66cm, 75kg).

III/ Items with conditional transport

1. Cash

  • Vietjet Air recommends that passengers keep cash in their carry-on baggage and not in checked baggage to avoid loss of property.
  • For international flights, passengers should familiarize themselves with the entry regulations of the destination country when carrying cash.
  • For domestic flights, Vietjet does not impose any limit on the amount of cash carried in carry-on or checked baggage.

3. Liquids

- International flights

Regulations on the carriage of liquids, gels, and aerosols (liquids) on the person and in carry-on baggage for international flights must comply with the following requirements:

 

+ Cabin baggage

  • The capacity of each container (bottle, jar, or vial) must not exceed 100 milliliters and must be completely sealed.
  • Each passenger is allowed to carry a maximum total of 1 liter of liquids.
  • Liquids purchased at shops in the international restricted area or on international flights may be carried on the person or in carry-on baggage without volume limitation, provided they are sealed in a tamper-evident security bag.

+ Checked baggage

  • All bottles, containers, and jars must be securely sealed to prevent leakage.
  • They must comply with the weight and size regulations for checked baggage.

+ Exceptions

  • The following items may be carried in carry-on or checked baggage without being subject to the above limitations:
  • Medications accompanied by a prescription clearly stating the prescriber’s full name and address, and the patient’s full name matching the name on the passenger’s ticket.
  • Milk and food for children and infants, provided that the child or infant is traveling with the passenger.

- Domestic flights

On domestic flights, Vietjet Air does not impose any limit on the volume of liquids carried in carry-on and/or checked baggage, provided that they comply with the applicable weight and size regulations for carry-on/checked baggage (except for odorous liquids and alcoholic beverages, which must comply with separate regulations).

 

4. Tobacco and e-cigarettes

Tobacco

  • For international flights: The carriage of tobacco must comply with the import/export and transit regulations of the countries of departure, destination, and transit.
  • For domestic flights: Vietjet Air does not restrict the carriage of tobacco in carry-on and/or checked baggage, provided that it complies with the weight and size regulations for carry-on/checked baggage.

E-cigarettes

  • Vietjet Air does not accept the carriage, in any form, of battery-powered handheld electronic smoking devices such as e-cigarettes, heated tobacco devices, electronic cigars, electronic pipes, or any other personal vaporizing devices. If these items are brought to the airport, they will be refused at check-in. Passengers are responsible for arranging the storage or disposal of such items before boarding the aircraft.

5. Wheelchairs and mobility aids

Conditions for checked baggage transport:

  • Batteries used for wheelchairs and mobility aids are wet-cell, non-spill, nickel metal hydride batteries, dry batteries; or
  • Batteries used for wheelchairs and mobility aids are wet-cell or Lithium-ion batteries.

Condition for carry-on baggage transport:

  • Batteries used for wheelchairs and mobility aids are removable Lithium-ion batteries; or
  • Batteries used for wheelchairs and mobility aids do not have the proper design for battery protection.

To get transported as carry-on or checked baggage, wheelchairs and mobility aids are required to meet some special terms of temperature, pressure tolerance, etc. Before a flight, passengers should contact Vietjet to understand the specific rules for wheelchairs and mobility aids.

 

6. Baggage containing ashes or human remains

  • Ashes may be transported as either carry-on baggage or checked baggage.

  • Human remains: Vietjet does not accept for carriage.

  • Note:

The above transportation conditions apply to itineraries that include Vietjet Air-operated flights. For segments operated by other airlines, passengers must contact and obtain approval from the operating carrier as well as the relevant authorities of the countries involved.
A quarantine certificate issued by a provincial/municipal health authority or a competent quarantine authority is required only for the transportation of ashes and human remains on international flights operated by Vietjet Air (not applicable to domestic flights).

IV/ Liability, limitation of liability and compensation

1. Liability for damage to checked baggage

We are not liable for damage caused by inherent defects, quality issues, or deficiencies of the baggage. We also shall not be liable for reasonable wear and tear, breakage, or damage resulting from normal handling, movement, and impact during air transportation.

We compensate passengers for baggage damage based on the general principle of compensation for actual damage, but not exceeding our liability limits. Passengers are responsible for proving the actual damage to their baggage.

Domestic: 200,000 VND/kg
International: 20 USD/kg

 

b. Partial damage compensation

Compensation for partially damaged checked baggage (Calculated in VND)

c. Liability limit

The liability limit for compensation for loss, shortage, or damage to checked baggage and carry-on baggage is 1,288 (one thousand two hundred eighty-eight) Special Drawing Rights (SDR) per passenger.

 

2. Liability for delayed baggage

1. Goodwill compensation in case of delayed baggage
This applies to delayed luggage, when the passenger is unable to retrieve their checked luggage within 24 hours of the flight's arrival at the destination, and the passenger is not a resident of the province or city where the arrival airport is located. The following rules regarding goodwill payments apply:

+ Domestic routes: 180,000 VND/passenger
+ International routes: 300,000 VND/passenger

The liability limit for compensation due to delay in carriage is 1,288 (one thousand two hundred eighty-eight) Special Drawing Rights (SDR) per passenger.

 

2. Exemption of liability
The airline shall not be liable for damage to baggage caused by delay if it proves that:
(i) The airline and its representatives have taken all necessary measures in accordance with applicable law to avoid such damage; or
(ii) It was impossible for the airline or its representatives to take such measures.

V/ Baggage tracing
