Built during Japanese rule as "Kōkan Airport", it was renamed Ching Chuan Kang (CCK) in 1955 to serve the United States Air Force. Infrastructure was completed in September 2003, with civilian flights commencing in May 2004. Initially serving domestic flights, the airport was upgraded in January 2017 to a Taichung International, Taichung City's only airport.
