The ancient village of Phuoc Tich, also known as "Con Duong," was established in the 15th century during the reign of King Le Thanh Tong. At that time, the Dai Viet feudal state was actively expanding its territory southwards. King Le Thanh Tong organized a large-scale migration from the northern regions to central Vietnam, including a group of people who settled in Con Duong. The total area of the village is about 49 hectares, with 12 river docks symbolizing the 12 original clans who came to reclaim the land and establish the village.
Throughout its history, the ancient village of Phuoc Tich has undergone more than 500 years of formation and development (1470 - 2024) under various names:
During the reign of Le Thanh Tong (15th century): The village was initially named Cam Quyet.
During the reign of the Nguyen Lords (17th century): The village was renamed Phuc Giang.
During the Tay Son Dynasty (18th century): The village was renamed Hoang Giang.
During the reign of Nguyen Gia Long (early 19th century): The village was renamed Phuoc Tich, a name it retains to this day.
Not only an important historical witness, the ancient village of Phuoc Tich also preserves many relics, architectural styles, and cultural aspects of the ancient North Central Vietnamese countryside. In 2009, the ancient village of Phuoc Tich was recognized as a national heritage site.
A distinctive feature of Phuoc Tich Village is its ancient wooden house architecture, with around 26 residential houses and 12 clan ancestral houses, temples, and shrines. It's rare to find a village that has preserved its dense collection of ancient architectural features, dating back 100-200 years, despite historical changes.
The rường house-garden complex in Phuoc Tich is characteristic of Hue's countryside, with a gate surrounded by tea plant hedges. The entrance, lined with tea plant hedges on both sides, leads to components such as a screen wall, dry pond, miniature mountain landscape, yard, main house, annex, garden, and water tank. Most houses follow the three-compartment, two-wing layout, with roofs covered in flat tiles and intricately carved wooden frames.
Exploring Phuoc Tich Village feels like a time-travel journey to the past, immersing you in the ancient beauty of artifacts preserved through generations.
Some must-visit attractions in Phuoc Tich Village include:

Mieu Doi: This temple worships the two founders and artisans, consisting of two parallel temples facing the O Lau River. The temples feature ancient architecture and are built with traditional bricks.
Quang Te Temple: Besides traditional Vietnamese rural structures, Phuoc Tich Village also has relics with Champa architectural features, such as Quang Te Temple. It worships Yoni, related to the fertility beliefs of the Cham people, and contains many Champa architectural artifacts.

Additionally, Phuoc Tich Village boasts beautiful and distinctive landscapes like water docks, the O Lau River, Ha Tri Lake, and Con Treng. The village not only benefits from natural beauty but also preserves many intangible cultural heritages such as the Tomb Sweeping Festival (January 15th lunar calendar), the Peace Praying Festival (June 16th lunar calendar), and the Commemorative Festival of the founders and artisans (November 5th lunar calendar).
Throughout its formation and development, pottery has become a trademark of Phuoc Tich Village. Previously, the village's exquisite pottery products were the only choice for the royal court, as reflected in the folk saying: "Om Phuoc Tich ngon com hoang de / Sen Ha Tri quy the Phu Xuan" (Phuoc Tich pot holds the emperor's delicious rice / Ha Tri lotus is as precious as Phu Xuan). The village had up to 10 pottery kilns operating year-round, bringing prosperity and fame for generations.
However, due to war and changing times, the pottery craft in Phuoc Tich Village ceased multiple times. By 1995, the last pottery kiln in the village had "gone cold." Thanks to the Hue Festivals starting in 2006, the village's pottery products and craft have been widely promoted to domestic and international visitors. Some kilns have resumed operations to serve tourism. In 2014, Phuoc Tich Pottery Village was recognized as a traditional craft village by the People's Committee of Thua Thien Hue Province.
