Presently, aviation has become one of Vietnam's focal economic sectors with substantial investments. Based on their operational purposes, airports in Vietnam are categorized into two types:
Civilian Airports: These airports are primarily established to meet the regular travel needs (domestic/international) of the public. Additionally, they may have areas designated for military activities when necessary.
Military Airports: These airports operate to serve the air defense training requirements of the Air Force under the management of the Ministry of National Defense.

Currently, Vietnam's aviation industry is experiencing robust growth, leading to the establishment of numerous modern airports. According to statistics, Vietnam currently has a total of 14 military airports and 22 civilian airports (12 international airports and 10 domestic airports).

Domestic airports cater to flights within the territorial boundaries of one country. Presently, Vietnam has 10 domestic airports, namely:
- Dien Bien Phu Airport
