The airport named Suvarnabhumi, meaning "Golden Land," was personally named by King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand. It was planned to begin construction in 1973 but was only implemented in 2022. In 2005, Airports of Thailand PLC took over and completed the project. In September 2006, the airport was inaugurated and started operations with the first international flights to Hong Kong and Singapore.
